A true story–only the ambitions are delusional:
Last week ago, a life-long friend of mine, now an entertainment lawyer in LA who dumped Boston for Brentwood right out of law school, said that my law firm, Hull McGuire PC, was “the Bruno Kirby of corporate law”. He explained: “The critics love you, you’ve been around a long time, you make money and you’ll always be in demand. The problem is that the general public doesn’t know who the f_ck you are”. I wasn’t sure how to take this. Bruno Kirby is an acclaimed character actor who has appeared in everything: The Godfather II (as the young Peter Clemenza), Good Morning Vietnam!, City Slickers and even a recent episode of the hit HBO series Entourage. He’s versatile, consistently great and well-respected. He has lasted.
The my friend said: “And like Oprah, you are optimistic and hopeful–but know that ‘hope is not a plan'”. You’ll get there. Writing. Lawyering. Somehow. Because you want it all…” Now bear with me. Another interesting if cruel fact is that Oprah Winfrey and I are almost exactly the same age. Thirty-five years ago we both appeared in Who’s Who Among American High Schools Students, which was new at the time, and not yet questioned as a possible scam. Oprah, who have never met, and I are both happy people. But she is way more famouse (I have a following on a few contintents but it might as well be the secretive Templar Knights)and she is a billion or two richer.
