When Bart Starr and his Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the first “Super Bowl” 1967, the entire world rolled its eyes. Only Yanks could cook something like this up. Super-this, super-that, Americans thought of ourselves–but for good reasons. In January of 1967, the U.S. was well into the second decade of a post World War II prosperity the world would envy and whenever possible mimic. We had created a “military-industrial” complex no one could match. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were still alive–John Kennedy’s killing was still an anomalous never-again rip in the fabric of our goodness and innocence–and Texan’s Texan Lyndon Johnson, the most grandiose American dude ever, was our president. We had a bad guy foil–Russia–and the worst thing you could say about Americans was that we were tasteless, poorly-cultured, rude, and built our houses and shopping malls so everything would look the same. Well, screw ’em, we thought, as we ate TV dinners by the pool and inhaled third-rate beer, coffee and tea mediator….blah…blah… — Agreements that stick
